Captain Siobhan Dunmoore wanted to believe the long war against the invading Shrehari Empire had finally banished the ghosts of her past. But when her ship Iolanthe, a heavily armed man-of-war masked as a bulk freighter, finds itself in need of replenishment after a long patrol spent stalking human and alien foes, she is confronted with events eerily reminiscent of a past she thought buried. When evidence of treason and marauders bold enough to strike a Navy outpost leave her no choice, Dunmoore knows she must finish the cleanup job Fleet Headquarters ordered her to abandon years ago.
Fortunately, Iolanthe and her crew are the perfect instruments with which to dispense much-needed retribution, despite General Orders and the Fleet‘s bureaucracy doing their best to tie a captain’s hands. With her ship taking on the guise of a privateer, she sets out on a merciless hunt to eliminate a band of soulless soldiers of fortune and teach the ghosts of her past a lesson they will never forget.

Please note there are a few spoilers in this review. Unsurprisingly, I am giving this latest Siobhan Dunmoore story a solid 5 stars for excellance in telling a thoroughly entertaining story that had me immersed from the beginning. As those who have read the previous books know, Stingray was retired from service (see book 3) and Siobhan is now Captain of a Q-ship disguised as a lumbering freighter called Iolanthe. She is tasked by the Commonwealth Navy to deal with pirates, Shrehari incursions and any and all dangers that lurk behind the frontlines of the eight year war with the Shrehari. After several weeks of fulfilling her assignment, Siobhan takes Iolanthe to the nearest colony that has a Navy supply depot. On arrival, she finds the colony has suffered several kinetic strikes that have wiped out the Colonial government and the Naval Supply Depot. Determined to track down the perpetraters, Siobhan takes Iolanthe and her crew on a lengthy chase that has her matching wits with 'pirates' and greedy, corrupt individuals with ties to the Colonial office and the Commonwealth government back on Earth. One of the things I like most in the Siobhan Dunmore books is the characters, both bad and good - they are well crafted and realistic. Thomson's Dunmoore is a strong-willed, no nonsense, chess-loving Captain whose steely determination and impetuousness can often get her in trouble. In Victory's Bright Dawn Siobhan comes close to the raggedy-edge as she once again encounters people from a past duty assignment who caused her more than a few headaches. Can she finally bring them to justice or will they be destined to get off scott-free once again? In order to answer that question, pick up your copy of this latest book - it's not only a great story but the action, battles and plot-line all keep the reader totally engrossed. In addition, Thomson's military experiences clearly shows in the detail, routines and military lingo and add to the realism of the books. I highly recommend this series. Just one final note: I miss Pushkin (Siobhan's former XO) and hope he turns up in the next book - although I do like his replacement, Ezekial Holt who is completely different from the more serious Pushkin :)Product details

Victory Bright Dawn Siobhan Dunmoore Book 4 eBook Eric Thomson Reviews
I just finished reading the four books in this series in a row and having done the same with the Decker series I was again more than pleased with this a new author for me. This was a fine naval series in the tradition of the British and American Navy. I again give a Bravo Zulu to the author. I await the next edition.
Enjoyed the new Siobhan Dunmoore book thoroughly. The Q-ship is a new start for her and she enjoys her mission. Sometimes there are a few monkey wrenches that get in the way but she handles them and get great satisfaction with a small victory but other related problems may end up coming her way. Looking forward to the next book.
The adventures of Siobhan continue. This book steps back from the high level action and intensity of the first three books and takes a leisurely pace focusing on intrigue instead. Unfortunately, the intrigue isn't very intriguing... There is a bit of Siobhan's history, but it is flashes of detail with very little substance. In fact, that describes the whole story.
This is a really good book in a good series. The storylines are excellent, the pace and character development is strong and on only found one comma in the wrong place. No odd cliff hanger like in so many other series books. I would recommend reading the prior books as it helps putting this one in context but it well enough written to stand on its own.
Siobhan Dunmoore and her crew on more adventures. Here she must return to familiar territory and she does it with relish. Along the way she picks up ground troops as ship complement. Entertaining story and 'hang' the bad guys!
I read the four Siobhan Dunmoore books in a week. The Author's focus is mostly on the people, with the hardware (properly) in a supporting role.
Each of the stories tells of a different kind of challenge for Siobhan to meet and overcome. The stories include touches of humor, some sorrow, a bit of the boredom that leads up to the seeming chaos of battle and, of course, well done battles.
I thoroughly enjoyed the stories and look forward to finding out what further adventures are in store for captain Dunmoore.
We’ve read of Dunmoore’s backstory burned by reactor coolant while serving as a young officer, hero of a decisive space battle, and a loose cannon when faced with crooks and war profiteers. But the author repeats that last so many times, it feels like filler.
She is assigned a potent ship, sent far from the front with a crew of (mostly) new faces – intriguing imagery. (four stars) The plot mixes planetary trickery with battles in space and on the ground. (four stars) The pacing (three stars) drags at times, such as this wordy byplay between Captain and Sergeant over a gunman's victim
“You’d have made a good candidate for the emergency medical services back home.” [Sgt]
“Is that what you were before the war, an EMT?” [Dunmoore]
“It was my full-time job long ago, but I was in the Scandia Regiment’s reserve battalion since well before the boneheads lost their ever-loving minds. I was activated on day two of the war, and I’ve been at it ever since. I’ll probably stay in once we kick the b*****ds’ butts back to Shrehari Prime. He’ll be okay. I’ll have my people take a door to make an improvised litter and bring him to the shuttle.”
Thomson, Eric. Victory's Bright Dawn (Siobhan Dunmoore Book 4) ( Locations 5760-5765). Sanddiver Books. Edition.
The plot is a rehash of an old western the new Sheriff in town must clean house to restore law-and-order. Question survivors, gather a posse, chase the raiders, and bring them to justice. (three stars) Although there is dialogue referencing Norse and Greek mythology, and the Captain relaxes over a chessboard, the writing didn’t hold my attention.
It is a pale echo of Honor Harrington. So, I rate it three stars.
