"On April 10, 1963, the submarine USS Thresher sank off the New England coast. The loss of 129 officers, sailors, and civilian technicians was a tragedy for the Navy, our nation, and especially for the families of that gallant crew. The USS Thresher was built in Kittery, Maine, at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Each year, the people of Kittery and neighboring communities in Maine and New Hampshire gather on the anniversary of the loss of the Thresher to pay their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation.
"The brave patriots who perished on the USS Thresher were memorialized not just with everlasting granite, but also with powerful words. The compelling series of articles published by Seacoast Online and the Portsmouth Herald during this solemn anniversary year that form this remarkable book tells powerful stories that will never be forgotten. With its title taken from the USS Thresher's official motto, Silent Strength is at times heartwarming, often heartbreaking, and always inspiring."
- From the Foreword by U.S. Senator Susan M. Collins

Silent Strength Remembering the Men of Genius and Adventure Lost in the World Worst Submarine Disaster D Allan Kerr 9781937721190 Books
The never before told personal stories of the heroes of the USS Thresher & their Families have been presented in a manner that is honest, heart warming & at times gut wrenching. Many Family members met with Don Kerr & were able to tell their own stories & share memories through tears, laughter, sadness & reverence. It was with great anticipation that I read Silent Strength, and I was not disappointed. It is a fabulous book, written by a man whom my brother Jimmy & I have grown to know, respect & admire. Sacrificing his own personal Family time, he researched the USS Thresher tragedy, conducted personal interviews with Family members & others associated with the USS Thresher & located treasured Family photos. The history of the USS Thresher has been told numerous times, but it is the personal stories that touched my heart. As the daughter of Fred Philip Abrams (USS Thresher Ship's Mechanical System Inspector), my brother Jimmy & I told our story for the first time ever to Don. We opened up our hearts, recalling both joyful & painful past memories, shared stories & felt as though we were quietly talking with a trusted Family friend. Our mother, Sherley, would have been so proud of Silent Strength, as are we. If you only read (1) book this year, I promise you that after reading Silent Strength, you will feel a real connection to the 129 heroes & to their Families. Human stories of love, loss, sacrifice, determination & pride in our country fill the pages. Silent Strength is a must read for every one who treasures the freedoms that we have today in our beautiful America!Carol (Abrams) Norton

Silent Strength Remembering the Men of Genius and Adventure Lost in the World Worst Submarine Disaster D Allan Kerr 9781937721190 Books Reviews
Full disclosure - I am the son of one of the men whose story is told in this volume. And that of course drew me to the book. But it was not only my father's story that held me. The book opens the door on the lives of many of those affected by this tragedy, and in doing so touches the heart as it touches our history. I am personally grateful to Mr. Kerr for his interest and the effectiveness of his presentation of some of these stories, and in raising awareness of this crucial moment not only in the regional history of northern New England, but in our country's naval history. The book will interest those who knew of Thresher and want to begin to hear "the rest of the story," or those who care to discover some of the real life consequences of this tragedy.
