In the Fall of 1971 young Sam was about to discover that life was not always as it seemed. All he wanted was to finish his final year in high school and leave town as fast as he could. That was until he met Patricia. After that sweet innocent summer at the Jersey Shore, she was all he thought about.
In this "Historical Fiction" about one of the most gruesome murders in Amercian history, Sams's youthful innocence confronts the harshness of the real world, a lost love an a terrible feeling that would be with him his whole life.
In the bucolic town of Colonial Westfield these sort of things just didn't happen. The neighbors gathered and watched the old house as the lights burned out one by one. The theater teacher asked the police for help but was met with little if any assistance. The rumors ran rampant and it was all found to be true, exceeding the worst fears and shedding light on a crime unimaginable and cruel.

I was drawn to the book as it developed the character of young Sam but mostly the elements of innocence lost and a young man discovering some of the harsh realities of our world. The way the police didn’t help the theater teacher was real enough and the neighbors talking about the house was a chilling bit on community and how we never quite know what is going on behind the closed doors of the house across the street.Product details

Breeze Knoll eBook Richard Cash Reviews
I chose this book for the historical fiction aspect, however it was the coming-of-age portions of the novel that I most enjoyed. A bit of "Summer of '42" broadened to include the updated challenges (and horrors) that faced the 'boomer' generation in the early 70's. Written through the eyes of a teenager aching for his Life to take form, I found the separate actions of the plot moved along nicely to the underlying rhythm of an as-yet uncorrupted late teen. Enjoy !
Coming of age books always grab me and this one is no different. Sam's youthful enthusiasm is sorely tested against the backdrop of a crime story hard to forget. I recommend a box of popcorn and a fine bottle of wine as you settle in to read this well told story.
This is a fun flashback to the 70's and then I realized I had heard of this story on that TV show "America's Most Wanted". The lifelong impact on Sam is very well portrayed in a real and tender manner. Once I got started I could not put the book down. A insightful and entertaining book!
I vaguely remember this true crime story when it happened, but this book brought it to life. A coming of age story, it recounts the haunting affect of a gruesome murder that haunted the hero for his entire adult life. This book illustrates beautifully the ripple effect of violent crime; the victimization is far-reaching and often leaves "by-standers" with festering questions and "if I had only..." thoughts for years. The build up to the actual crime was so suspenseful, I could not put this book down.
Fiction woven from a true-life crime that stunned the community and the nation is the basis for this coming of age novel told through the eyes of a boy named Sam. John List, a real murderer committed a horrendous crime in his Victorian mansion, Breeze Knoll in Westfield, NJ in 1971, and escaped without a trace. The author has used the fictional voice of Sam to tell the story of his high schools days and his friendship with List’s daughter to give details of intimate knowledge of the family and what he perceives led to the massacre.
A great read for a rainy day in one sitting. Hope to see more from this author.
